The image is read in this page and embedded in the code as a data: URL. It is not uploaded, and it stays inside the file you download.

More design options

The dark half of the code. Keep it well below the background in lightness.

Covers the quiet zone as well as the gaps between modules. A transparent background leaves it out of the file, so nothing is drawn with it.

Contrast 11.5:1 between the modules and the background.

Presets

PNG and WebP keep an alpha channel; the SVG simply omits the background rectangle. Whatever the code is placed on becomes the light half of the contrast.

Gradient

A gradient fills the dark modules only. Its lighter end sets the contrast a scanner actually gets, so both ends have to stay dark.

The second colour, used only while a gradient is selected. It is measured for contrast alongside the first.

45°

Degrees clockwise from a left-to-right sweep. A radial gradient spreads from the centre outwards, so the angle applies to a linear one only.

Module shape

Rounded shapes cover less of each cell. The centre stays covered, which is where a decoder samples, but a small print of a dense code reads more reliably as squares.

Corner frame

The ring of the three finder patterns.

Corner centre

The eye inside each finder pattern.

4 modules

The blank margin around the code, measured in modules. 4 is the specified minimum.

Higher recovery survives more damage and costs capacity, so the same content produces a denser symbol.

A logo sits at the centre and holds the level at H. Its width limit follows the symbol: 14% on the smallest code, 30% on a dense one.

Encoded text

Encode a Facebook page, an event or any other Facebook address as a QR code. Facebook is one of the few platforms with a permanent numeric address behind the username, which matters when the code is going somewhere it will stay for years.

When someone scans it

The camera shows a facebook.com address and opens it on tap, in the Facebook app if one is installed and in the browser otherwise.

Usernames move, numeric ids do not

A Facebook page or profile with no username is served at facebook.com/profile.php?id= followed by the numeric id Facebook assigned when it was created. Setting a username replaces that number in the address you see, but the number itself is not reissued — it is the identity underneath, and the pretty URL is a label on top of it.

That gives you a choice the other platforms on this site do not offer. A username address is short and readable, so it encodes to a smaller symbol and looks right printed as text. A numeric address is longer and means nothing to a human, but it does not depend on a username staying yours. Since nobody reads a QR code with their eyes, the useful pattern for long-lived print is to encode the durable address and print the readable one in text beside it.

  • facebook.com/yourpage — short, readable, tied to a username that can be changed or released
  • facebook.com/profile.php?id=… — longer payload, no reliance on the username
  • Use the third option to paste a profile.php address, since it is a query string rather than a plain slug

An event link has a shelf life

An event address is facebook.com/events/ plus a numeric event id, and it resolves for exactly as long as the event exists. Delete or cancel it and the link stops working — Facebook removes deleted events, which its help pages describe as taking up to seven days. There is no archive URL to fall back on and no way for a printed code to notice.

So an event code belongs on things thrown away after the event: a flyer, a table card, a poster with a date on it. It does not belong on anything reusable — a stand banner, a shop window, a business card — where a dead link is worse than no link, because a scanner who reaches an error page assumes the business is gone rather than the event.

Why there is a box for any Facebook URL

Facebook serves far more than pages and events under one domain: groups under /groups/, individual posts under /posts/ or /permalink.php, profile.php addresses, Marketplace listings, and fb.me short links. Guessing at a path rule for all of that would produce codes that scan cleanly and land nowhere, so the third option simply encodes the address you paste.

Before pasting, cut the tracking parameters. Addresses copied out of the Facebook apps often arrive with fbclid or similar app-generated parameters attached, sometimes longer than the URL itself. They do not change where the link goes; they lengthen the payload, push the symbol up a version or two, and carry a record of the share path into your printed artwork. Everything from the question mark onwards can usually go — check the trimmed address in a browser once before committing it to print.

Questions and answers

Should I encode the username address or the numeric one?

Use the username address for anything short-lived or where the printed URL should be readable. Use the numeric profile.php address for long-lived print, because it does not depend on the username remaining yours. The numeric form makes a slightly larger symbol, which is the price of that durability.

What happens to an event code after the event is deleted?

It stops resolving. The address points at one numeric event id, and Facebook removes deleted events — its help pages say that can take up to seven days. Print event codes only on material you expect to discard, and point anything reusable at the page instead.

The link I copied has a long string of characters after a question mark.

Those are tracking parameters such as fbclid that the Facebook apps add when you copy a link. They do not affect the destination, but they inflate the payload and make the symbol denser than it needs to be. Delete everything from the question mark onwards and confirm the shorter address still opens the right page.

Will the code open the Facebook app rather than the browser?

That is the scanning phone's decision. The code contains a plain https link, and the operating system hands facebook.com addresses to an installed app when one is registered for them. If no app is installed, the browser opens the same address.

How a static QR code works

Every code on this site is static: the payload is written into the black and white modules themselves. Nothing is looked up when the code is read, no server of ours takes part, and no subscription holds the printed code up. The same property is the limit — once it is printed, what it contains cannot be changed.

Three things then decide whether a printed code reads: how many bytes the payload came to, which recovery level absorbs the damage, and how wide a single module ends up on paper. These guides work through each of them with the numbers.
