The image is read in this page and embedded in the code as a data: URL. It is not uploaded, and it stays inside the file you download.

The dark half of the code. Keep it well below the background in lightness.
Covers the quiet zone as well as the gaps between modules. A transparent background leaves it out of the file, so nothing is drawn with it.
Contrast 11.5:1 between the modules and the background.
PNG and WebP keep an alpha channel; the SVG simply omits the background rectangle. Whatever the code is placed on becomes the light half of the contrast.
A gradient fills the dark modules only. Its lighter end sets the contrast a scanner actually gets, so both ends have to stay dark.
The second colour, used only while a gradient is selected. It is measured for contrast alongside the first.
Degrees clockwise from a left-to-right sweep. A radial gradient spreads from the centre outwards, so the angle applies to a linear one only.
Rounded shapes cover less of each cell. The centre stays covered, which is where a decoder samples, but a small print of a dense code reads more reliably as squares.
The ring of the three finder patterns.
The eye inside each finder pattern.
The blank margin around the code, measured in modules. 4 is the specified minimum.
Higher recovery survives more damage and costs capacity, so the same content produces a denser symbol.
A logo sits at the centre and holds the level at H. Its width limit follows the symbol: 14% on the smallest code, 30% on a dense one.

Encode a TikTok profile or one video as a QR code that any phone camera reads. The two options produce noticeably different symbol sizes, because a video URL carries a 19-digit id that a profile URL does not.
When someone scans it
The camera shows a tiktok.com address and opens it on tap — the TikTok app when it is installed, otherwise the web player in the browser.
A profile link prints smaller than a video link
TikTok profile addresses are short. tiktok.com/@ plus a username of ten characters is around 35 characters in total, which fits a version 3 symbol at medium recovery — 29 modules across. A video address adds the username, the /video/ segment and a 19-digit video id, landing near 60 characters, which needs version 4: 33 modules across.
Four extra modules sounds trivial and is not, once the code is small. Print both at the same 20 mm width and the version 4 modules are about 12 per cent narrower than the version 3 ones. On a sticker, a receipt footer or a corner of a poster, that is the difference between a code that reads at arm's length and one that needs the phone brought close. If the size is fixed and small, the profile link is the one that will scan.
What the phone opens, with or without the app
The payload is an ordinary https URL, so the scan is handled the way any web link is. A phone with TikTok installed usually hands the address to the app; a phone without it opens tiktok.com in the browser, where videos play in the web player. Neither behaviour is set by the code, and neither can be forced by it.
TikTok's own in-app code is a different object from this one: it is generated inside the app, in TikTok's styling, and delivered as an image. What you get here is your own artwork around a standard symbol — chosen colours, an optional centre logo, a controlled quiet zone, and vector output that stays crisp when someone scales it up for a shop window.
Choosing between a video and a profile for print
A video code points at one clip. It is the right choice for a card in a parcel that says how to assemble the thing you just bought, or a sign next to a demonstration — cases where the clip is the point and the print is disposable. It fails the moment the video is deleted, made private or taken down.
A profile code points at whatever you have posted most recently. It is the right choice for anything with a long life, because it keeps working through your entire content calendar. The trade-off is honest: you cannot control what the scanner sees first, only that they reach you.
One more durability note. TikTok addresses profiles by username, with no public numeric profile URL as a fallback. If the account is renamed, printed codes stop resolving. Encode a short link on your own domain if a rename is on the table.
Questions and answers
Should I print a profile code or a video code?
Print a profile code on anything that will outlive a single video: packaging, signage, business cards. Print a video code only when the clip itself is the message and the printed item is short-lived. A video code stops working when the clip is deleted or set to private.
What happens if I change my TikTok username?
Printed codes stop resolving. TikTok builds profile addresses from the username and publishes no numeric profile URL to fall back on, so there is nothing durable to encode instead. If a rename is possible, encode an address on a domain you control and forward it to TikTok, so you can repoint it without reprinting.
Does it work on a phone with no TikTok app?
Yes. The code contains a normal web address, so the browser opens tiktok.com and the video plays in the web player. TikTok may prompt to install the app; that prompt comes from the site, not from the code, and the page still works if it is dismissed.
Can I use the short vm.tiktok.com link instead?
You can, and it encodes to a smaller symbol. The trade-off is that a short link is a redirect: the scan reaches TikTok's shortener first and depends on it continuing to resolve. The full address has no intermediate step and shows the destination in the camera preview, which is usually worth the extra modules.
How a static QR code works
Every code on this site is static: the payload is written into the black and white modules themselves. Nothing is looked up when the code is read, no server of ours takes part, and no subscription holds the printed code up. The same property is the limit — once it is printed, what it contains cannot be changed.
Three things then decide whether a printed code reads: how many bytes the payload came to, which recovery level absorbs the damage, and how wide a single module ends up on paper. These guides work through each of them with the numbers.
